Sofas

Giorgetti sofa guide, Skyline or Adam for your room.

Carlo Colombo drew both of the big modular sofas in the Giorgetti catalogue, Adam in 2018 and Skyline in 2019. They share a designer and a feather seat, and they differ in frame, armrests and the size of room they want.

Skyline, Adam
Giorgetti Skyline 5 seater fabric sofa, cut out of the studio shot

A Giorgetti sofa is the largest thing most buyers order from Meda, and the one they live with longest. The catalogue we quote holds several sofa families, but two of them carry most of the modular work: Skyline and Adam, both by Carlo Colombo. If your room can take a sofa over ten feet long, you will end up comparing these two. This guide sets them next to each other.

Measure the room first.

Measure the wall or the open side of the room where the sofa goes, then mark the doors and the path people walk. You will move a sofa that blocks the way to the terrace door within a month. Leave about three feet for a walkway and about 16 inches between the seat edge and a coffee table.

Then check the numbers Giorgetti publishes. The Skyline sofas run from 402 cm to 461 cm wide, which is about 13 to 15 feet. The corner pieces with a chaise longue reach 405 cm deep. Adam runs smaller: 310 cm for the three seater, 370 cm for the longest fabric sofa, and a corner unit of 300 by 265 cm. Adam also comes in three widths per element, which gives you more room to fit an awkward wall.

Two frames.

Skyline sits on a structure of multilayer and solid wood with elastic straps. You see the upholstery, and the frame stays inside.

Adam shows its frame. Giorgetti builds it in poplar plywood and painted metal, and you choose the metal in a bronze color with a natural effect or in black nickel. You can then cover the frame itself in fabric, leather or saddle leather. That choice changes the look more than the fabric of the cushions does: a saddle leather frame with a linen seat reads warmer than a black nickel frame with bouclé.

Seat and back.

Both families put goose feathers around inserts of multi-density polyurethane, so both have the soft, lived-in look of a feather cushion. Plump the cushions each week and they keep their shape.

Skyline adds memory foam to the seat, a thermosensitive layer that shapes itself to you. Its backrest comes in two versions. One is a goose down cushion with a polyurethane core and leather piping. The other props the cushion on a leather panel with a reclining mechanism, so you can set how upright the back sits.

Adam offers cushions of 63 by 42 cm and 52 by 50 cm in feather, with removable covers in fabric or leather.

Armrests do more than you expect.

On Skyline you pick the armrest. It comes high at 62 cm, high and molded, low at 51 cm, or as a storage armrest in saddle leather with drawers in ash. The storage version takes a top in ash in four finishes or in one of six marbles, Calacatta, Portoro and Zebrino among them. It turns the end of the sofa into a side table with drawers.

Adam completes its armrest end with accessories: a low table in Canaletto walnut, saddle leather or marble on the right or the left, a covering with pockets in leather or saddle leather, or a storage box in saddle leather.

Modules and extras.

Skyline comes in three lengths, with a chaise longue, a back to back unit, a stool and a curved version. The catalogue also lists a sofa with a magazine rack built into it. Accessories include a low table in ash, walnut, marble or pommelle mahogany, and an element with a drawer and a removable tray that can take a basin in gray or bronze glass.

Adam covers sofas, a corner sofa, a day bed and an armchair from the same system. If you want a matching armchair across from the sofa, Adam has one in widths of 90, 100 and 130 cm.

Matching the sofa to the room.

Pick Skyline for a large living room where the sofa floats in the middle and faces a view or a fireplace. The back to back unit and the curved piece let you split the room in two.

Pick Adam for a room where the sofa sits against a wall or runs along a window, and where you want the frame to show. Its smaller modules and the three widths per element also make it the easier of the two for a city apartment and a narrow elevator.

Both take fabric or leather and both have removable upholstery, so you can clean the covers or change them after a few years.

Price and lead time.

The price depends on the size, the covering and the finish, and a Skyline in leather with a marble topped storage arm costs a different amount from the same sofa in fabric. Giorgetti builds each sofa to order and confirms the lead time with the quote.

Send us the size of the wall or the room, a photo if you have one, and the covering you like. We reply with a Skyline or Adam layout drawn to your floor, the finishes on offer and a price for each module.
